Hypoglycemia Symptoms Signs

Glucose, or otherwise known as the blood sugar, is the main component of carbohydrates and brain food could be present but not detected by the brain. In some instances, however, this occurs as a product of fasting or inadequate intake of carbohydrates and sugars.

Hypoglycemia Symptoms Signs

Hypoglycemia symptoms signs include:

  • Anxiety or feelings of nervousness and inability to stay calm
  • Palpitations or the feeling that ones heart is going to get out of one's chest;
  • Shakiness and/or trembling of hands
  • Cold and clammy skin
  • Confusion
  • A feeling of hunger
  • Dizziness

Some may have all of these hypoglycemia symptoms signs while others only have one or two. It all depends on the person and on the blood sugar level that he has.

Hypoglycemia Symptoms Signs

Hypoglycemia can be confirmed by checking the glucose levels by means of a glucometer. Some diabetics know how to use this device and they do the testing themselves. It is done by pricking a small portion from the side of the index finger. A droplet of blood is placed on a small testing strip and inserted into the device. The result appears in digital form on the small screen after a few seconds. Hypoglycemia is confirmed if the result is low or less than 45 mg/dl.

Hypoglycemia Symptoms Signs

Some people who after checking blood sugar levels have a result around 50 or 60 are encouraged to take in some concentrated form of carbohydrate like orange juice. Others however, who resulted lower, are given some form of intravenous glucose especially if they are unable to take in food.

Some hypoglycemia symptoms signs may signify a dangerous condition and should be immediately reported to the doctor or if at home, brought to the hospital for treatment. This includes:

  • Twitching
  • Convulsions
  • Loss of Consciousness
  • Pallor

If these have occurred after showing the first hypoglycemia symptoms signs, then the condition should be treated immediately. People who have become unconscious suddenly wake up as if nothing happened after taking in intravenous glucose.

To avoid these symptoms from showing up, one should take his or her meals regularly and not skip meals. If taking insulin, the dosages should be checked accurately to prevent occurrence of hypoglycemia. In addition, exercises should not be done in long periods and drinking in moderation.
